Utility Bills
The City is
divided into three sections. Utility bills, for useage of Water, Sewer,
Recycling and Trash are mailed to 1/3 of the City’s customers each month. Bills
cover the 3 months usage prior to the month the bills are mailed. A bill mailed
in January is for the months of October, November and December. Each customer
will receive 4 bills a year. Bills mailed in January are due on the 15th
of February, and so on. Unpaid bills after 30 days from the due date are
processed for shut off. Therefore a bill that was received in January, was due
on February 15th and not paid as of March 15th will be
shut off on the 16th of March. There is a $75.00 turn on fee in
addition to the payment of the utility bill before water service will be turned
back on.
City Income Tax
The City of
Ionia approved a 1% income tax rate in 1994. Property taxes were reduced from
15 mills for City Operating to 3 mills due to the increase in revenues from the
income tax. All residents pay 1% income tax on all of their income, less a $700
exemption. Residents who work out of town and pay income tax to other cities
receive a credit on their tax liability. Non-residents who work in the City pay
.5% (1/2 of a percent) on income earned in the City. Residents who work out of
town are responsible for quarterly deposits to the City if their employer
doesn’t withhold City Income Tax from their paychecks. We strive to keep income
tax separate from the rest of the City Hall to insure privacy of our residents.
City
Hall Collection Center
The “Water
Department” collects property taxes, utility bills, and parking tickets in City
Hall, 114 N. Kidd St., across the street from the Post Office. The Income Tax
Office collects Income Tax. Both windows are open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday. Our mailing address is: P.O. Box 496, Ionia, MI 48846. There
is also a drop box in front of City Hall, for after-hours payments that are
collected each morning at 9:00 a.m. In addition, any payment that is collected
by City Hall can also be put on VISA or MasterCard. We have the ability to take
credit cards and are working on automatic draft payment through your bank in the
near future.
